About Chickenpox
Chickenpox (varicella) is a highly contagious viral infection that causes itchy skin blisters and flu-like symptoms. While more common in children, it can affect individuals of any age if not vaccinated.
Causes & Transmission
Chickenpox spreads through respiratory droplets and direct contact with blisters. Individuals are contagious from 1–2 days before the rash appears until all blisters have crusted over.
Common Symptoms
- Fever
- General fatigue
- Itchy rash that turns into fluid-filled blisters
- Loss of appetite
- Headache
Prevention Through Vaccination
The chickenpox vaccine is highly effective and recommended for children, adolescents, and adults who haven’t had the disease or previously been vaccinated.
Care & Home Management
Most cases are mild and managed at home with :
- Antihistamines for itch relief
- Cool baths
- Adequate hydration
- Over-the-counter fever reducers (when appropriate)
Complications & When to Seek Help
Seek medical care if there is :
- High fever lasting 3 days
- Signs of skin infection
- Difficulty breathing
- Severe headache or stiff neck
- Symptoms in pregnancy
